CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The New Testament offers many descriptions for the church which are the body of Christ and Christ is the head, Christians are the many members. Two, the church is related to Christ as branches are to a vine. A more intricate and pervasive relationship is implied by this image than by the image of the body. Three, the church is the bride of Christ, an image that stresses the personal, intimate quality of the relationship and the depth of mutual commitment. Four, the church is the people of God, a description that stresses, on one hand, the connection of the church with Israel and, on the other, the church’s potential universality.

In the general perspective, the church is the body of Christ and members are called to service which involves rendering by choice or freewill for the benefit of the wider community by an individual, group, or institution without necessarily expecting monetary gain in full knowledge and appreciation of being a volunteer.

We who follow Christ are identified as servants (Matt. 20:25-28), priests (1 Pet. 2:4-9), and friends (John 15:14-15). Each of these identifiers is wrapped around a core of voluntary, grateful response to God. And none carries the task-orientation embedded in the way we typically use the word volunteer. Calling members of the body of Christ “volunteers” communicates an all-encompassing call to discipleship which Jesus described.

In the life of a Church, it is expected that the majority of the work of the Church are done by members of the Church because there are numerous needs (both human and materials), and roles and responsibilities designed to meet such needs are mostly filled by individuals who volunteer themselves to make contributions to meet the needs and achieve growth and development both for themselves and the organization.

However, it has been observed by the researcher that there is a telling gap between identified needs in the Church and the satisfaction of same owing to the dearth of volunteers willing to make time and other resources available to meet the needs.

The researcher has observed a vicious cycle of sort in the operation of church, namely, needs are not met probably due to the people (laity) not offering themselves for service, and conversely, the needs in the church are seemingly not met by the people not offering themselves for service. This situation has led to unhealthy developments in the Church such as conflicts, disaffection, dissatisfaction, lack of motivation, non-retention of members, frustration, stagnation and so on.

Furthermore, the indifference or nonchalance of the people has been observed to push the leadership to use more of coercion and subtle threats to drive them. All the above may not be unconnected with lack of leadership skills on the part of the people.

Accordingly, the researcher is motivated to conduct this research with a view to finding out ways to develop leadership skills in the laity to ameliorate the challenge stated above.

  • STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Do people volunteer themselves for service in church in order to acquire leadership skills?

Does church leadership have a role play in ensuring volunteer empowerment?

Does volunteering positively impact the leadership skills of the people?

Does the church do better with more volunteers?

Do volunteer workers build leadership skills better than paid workers?

Does leadership pressure strengthen the volunteers resolve?
