CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

In recent times, the term maltreatment has become popularized widely in the social circles. Though, this may not be an unfamiliar to the Christendom but, it has now been prevalent also in the religious circle

With the increasing rate at which maltreatment is recorded in the society and in the Church, it behooves that such growing trend which cuts across every sphere of human existence should be given an in-depth probing as it affects the Church in its totality.

Hence, the subject in question is worth it as we know that the Church as mid-wife by God was Intended by Him to be light in the dark ravaged society and also manifest the fruits of his kingdom. A noncompliance would be an outright aberration.

Statement of the Problem

This research work is set out to address the following problems:

How leadership style impact the Church.
How maltreatment enhance maximum productivity of leaders.
How maltreatment foster peace and unity in the Church.
How maltreatment in Church leadership stimulates commitment among members.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is:

To examine if maltreatment hampers the effectiveness and efficiency of leaders.
To investigate how maltreatment hinders peaceful coexistence and unity in the Church.
To determine how maltreatment affects the commitment of members.
- Significance of the Study

In pursuit of a clear understanding of the subject matter, the following are the benefits that this research work will offer. The importance of this research work is as follows;

It would help churches or ministries to pay a close attention to the adopted mode of leadership.
It would help churches and ministries to develop a working policy on welfare packages for both the ministers and the member.
It would help churches and ministries to invest resources (material and immaterial) to making plans work out effectively.
It would help churches and ministries to give more attention to extensive re-orientation of leaders that would further forestall the occurrence of maltreatment in the church.
- Delimitations of the Study

This research work looks extensively at the maltreatment in the church setting mostly by the top hierarchy of the leadership. Though there are other leadership issues, this research work is not dealing much with that. Hence with the focus on this, my interest is to observe how it impacts on church growth or otherwise.

This study is however looking microscopically at Mountain Of Solution Church, Idi-Iroko Maryland, Lagos, Nigeria. This chosen population is to further relate the subject under study so as to have a realistic outcome to the research.
