CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

This chapter is to address the background to this study, statement of the problem, purpose of the study, significance of the study, delimitation of the study, research procedure and definition of terms.

1.1 Background of the Study

Parenting has always been an everyday topic when it comes to children behavioral formation. Parenting back dated from the 60’s is different from what it is today, which is so demanding and challenging and as modernization/civilization increases so the challenging factors e.g peer pressure, human rights revolution, the communication explosion, the internet, rising in divorce rates, single parents raising kids e.t.c

According to Dr. James Dobson these frustration have produced what he calls a crisis of confidence in today’s parents. This fact was verified in his study of more than 35,000 parents, when Dr. Dobson asked about the greatest frustrations in raising children the majority focused not on their sons and daughter but on their own failures as parents.[1] As the bible saying goes that “Train up children in the right way and when old, they will not stray”. There is need for children to be trained adequately by their parents for proper behaviors, so as when they grow to live home and subsequently by their foolishness go into the wilderness of unrighteous living, when they are old they know the wisdom of righteous living that they learned from their parents.

If parents fulfill their responsibility to implant a moral guide by which their children can find their way back to the morals received at their early stage. The challenge is for parents and church leaders to realize the need to ensure a parenting by an ability to pass moral heritage, personal interactions and simplicity of the gospel with cognisence to their ages and levels without diluting the intent, to ensure the continuity and growth of the church and positive society in face of many of many challenges facing development of a child of today.

However, the aim of this paper is to look at the implications of II Timothy 1:3-7 for parenting in the 21st century church.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Parenting as an important assignment on the face of the earth have been ignored and taken for levity by many mothers, fathers and the church resulting to children less mannered, absent mind to God, nuisance to the society and no content to stand the virus been spread in the world.
