CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Right from the fall of man: Adam and Eve, healing has been a necessity for every mankind, generation to generation, and this has been a primary demand. Therefore, everyone is in need of healing, either physical, mental, social and so on. Even most of the world religion believe in healing to cure diseases. Though, it shall be discussed later in the research. Presently, the church is facing a lot of problem, thus so many were healed in the church that is not divine. The question is, is it every healing services done in the church that is from God? And what are the people mind Set towards healing? The association of religion with medicine continued well into the eighteenth century.

Christian healing ministry, rooted in biblical teachings and practices, faces a myriad of challenges that affect its efficacy and acceptance within both secular and religious contexts. One significant challenge is the skepticism surrounding the legitimacy of healing claims. Research by DeMaris (1992) highlights that many individuals view faith-based healing with suspicion, often attributing healing experiences to psychological factors rather than divine intervention. This skepticism can hinder the willingness of both practitioners and patients to engage fully in healing practices. Furthermore, the disparity between traditional medical approaches and spiritual healing can create tension within communities, leading to divided opinions on the best methods for addressing physical and emotional ailments (Davis, 2015).

Despite these challenges, the prospects for Christian healing ministry remain promising. Recent studies indicate a growing interest in integrative approaches that combine faith and medicine. For instance, a survey conducted by Johnson and Smith (2018) found that many Christians are increasingly open to exploring healing practices that encompass both spiritual and medical dimensions. This trend suggests a potential for collaboration between faith leaders and healthcare professionals, which could enhance the overall efficacy of healing interventions. Moreover, the emphasis on holistic healing—addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being—aligns with contemporary views on health that advocate for a more comprehensive approach (Taylor, 2020).

The Catholic Church had tried, from the time of the middle ages, to stop priests engaging in medicine for gain. The reformation had stopped Protestants from healing by means of sacraments which was regarded as popish by superstition (the age of miracles being thought to be long past). But, until the processes of secularization in eighteenth century began to reduce the significance of religion, Christianity remained a powerful force to be appealed when ill, rich and poor alike had recourse to religion even when they were using naturalistic medicine (Wear Andrew, 1998) There is nothing bad in naturalistic medicine but it has replaced God in the hearts of people.

The supernatural act which resolves a physical, emotional or spiritual problem is called divine healing and the supernatural element is God. Most of the major world religions believe in some supernatural healing to cure disease by countering black magic and casting out Jinn. Islam uses Rugya, Tibeton. Buddhists use GSO-waRigpa, which includes elements of medicine, mantra and meditation^.⁽gotquestions.com) Modern pantheism such as New Age philosophy or cosmic humanism use a wide variety of techniques from ancient religions and the occult. The most reliable, permanent and powerful among all these view of healing is divine healing which Christian believe in through the name of Jesus. Healing in the non-Christian religion’s view, requires a physical ritual to coerce a diety into action or to manipulate an impersonal healing force.

Healing (literally means to make whole) is the restoration of health from an unbalanced diseased or damaged organism with physical damage or disease suffered by an organism: Healing involves the repair of living tissue, organs and the biological system as a whole and resumption of normal functioning. It is the process by which the cells in the body regenerate and repair to reduce the size of a damaged or necrotic area and replace it with new living tissue. The gospel narrative is approximately one fifth of Jesus’ healing ministry. Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people through a command.

The aim of this research is for people to know that using herbs and western medicine are parts of Dive healing. And everyone should depends on God for healing through the name of Jesus Christ than thrusting in healing elements created by God.

The future of Christian healing ministry is further bolstered by its adaptability in responding to cultural shifts and the needs of diverse populations. As global health crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, have emphasized the importance of mental and spiritual well-being, Christian healing ministries are increasingly positioned to provide support (Harris, 2021). By integrating prayer, community support, and evidence-based practices, these ministries can address the holistic needs of individuals. Moreover, the rise of digital platforms has allowed for broader outreach, enabling healing services to reach those who may not have access to traditional church settings (Nguyen, 2022). Overall, while challenges persist, the evolving landscape presents significant opportunities for the Christian healing ministry to thrive and impact individuals’ lives positively.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Divine healing is becoming a big problem in the church of God to the extent that many that were not gifted in divine healing are seeking it with evil forces. The researcher discovered that those who know herbs medicine or traditional method of healing are establishing churches for more customers in the name of membership. This practice has stained the church of God. Many notable healing were done which made people believe in things used for healing than the great healer (Jesus Christ). This research work attempts to address the questionable practice of healing in the name of Divine healing.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this research is to probe into the questionable approach to healing. The probing is to be done in the light of exegesis of the selected text using the platform of the church and the quest for her growth. The specific objectives are:

1.5 Significance of the Study

This research work is of great significance with the understanding that it will be beneficial to the following; Churches, Spiritual Leaders, Pastors, Teachers of the Word, Scholar and every individuals that desires to seek the truth.

The study of the challenges and prospects of Christian healing ministry is significant for multiple reasons, particularly in understanding its role within contemporary society. As individuals increasingly seek holistic approaches to health and well-being, the integration of spiritual practices with conventional medical treatments has become a vital area of exploration. By examining the challenges faced by Christian healing ministries, such as skepticism and the tension between faith and medicine, this study can provide valuable insights into how these ministries can adapt and evolve in the modern health landscape.

Moreover, understanding the challenges of Christian healing ministry can enhance the dialogue between religious communities and healthcare professionals. Many practitioners in the medical field are often unaware of the spiritual dimensions of health that patients may prioritize. This study highlights the necessity for collaboration, suggesting that when healthcare providers acknowledge the role of faith in healing, they can offer more comprehensive care. On the prospect side, the study holds importance for identifying innovative practices that can enhance the effectiveness of healing ministries. 1.6 Delimitation of the Study

The scope of this study is confined to challenges and prospect of Christian healing ministry, a case study Christ Apostolic Church Agbala Iwosan, Ondo, Ondo State.

1.7. Limitation of the Study

One significant limitation of this study is the potential for bias in selecting sources and data. Given that Christian healing ministry often involves deeply personal and subjective experiences, there is a risk that the perspectives represented in the research may not fully capture the diversity of views within the faith community. Additionally, the reliance on qualitative data, such as personal testimonies and interviews, may introduce subjective interpretations that could skew the findings. This limitation highlights the need for a more comprehensive approach, potentially incorporating quantitative methods to provide a broader understanding of the effectiveness and challenges of healing ministries.

1.8 Research Procedure

The methodology in carrying out this research is the historical survey type approach. Using library and field works. The library work is done by reading textbook, Bible commentaries, Christian literatures, internet, library information, personal experience and sampling.

1.9. Operational definition of Terms

Challenges: These refer to the difficulties or obstacles that impede progress or effectiveness in a particular context. In the realm of Christian healing ministry, challenges may include skepticism from both the public and medical communities, theological disagreements, and the integration of spiritual practices with conventional healthcare.

Prospect: This term denotes the potential for future success or development. In the context of Christian healing ministry, prospects refer to the opportunities for growth, collaboration, and innovation that can enhance the effectiveness of healing practices, as well as the increasing acceptance of holistic approaches to health.

Christian: This term pertains to individuals or communities that follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and adhere to the principles of Christianity. It encompasses a wide range of beliefs, practices, and denominations, all of which may have different interpretations of faith and healing.

Healing: Healing generally refers to the process of restoring health or well-being, whether physically, emotionally, or spiritually. In Christian contexts, healing can involve prayer, faith, and spiritual interventions aimed at achieving wholeness and health in alignment with biblical teachings.

Ministry: In a religious context, ministry refers to the act of serving or caring for others, particularly in accordance with the teachings of a faith tradition.
