PAULINE HOUSEHOLD AS PARADIGM FOR PRACTICAL THEOLOGY ON MARRIAGE

The Pauline family serves as an example for marital theology in practise. The apostle Paul addresses several issues related to marriage and family in the New Testament. His advice to married couples is to treat one other with obedience, love, and respect.

When looking at the Pauline family as a model for a practical theology of marriage, the idea of reciprocal submission stands out as a central tenet. According to Ephesians 5:21, “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” The basis of a marriage built on mutual obedience is laid in this passage. Each partner should show deference to their partner by taking into account their partner’s wants, needs, and perspectives.

Paul also emphasises the significance of love in a marriage. He tells husbands to treat their wives with the same selfless devotion that Christ showed to the church (Ephesians 5:25). The devotion and dedication necessary in a marriage are exemplified by this husband’s love. Titus 2:4 makes it clear that wives are expected to love their husbands as well.

The Pauline model of the ideal family home also places a premium on respect. Paul writes that every man should love his wife as much as he loves himself in Ephesians 5:33. The value of mutual respect in a marriage is emphasised in this passage. Each partner in a marriage must show the other respect and kindness at all times.

With its emphasis on mutual submission, love, and respect, the Pauline home offers a model for practical theology on marriage. A happy and fulfilling marriage may be built on the basis of these ideas.
